GTA IV recommended PC specifications released, game delayed?

Posted at 21:36 GMT by Chris :: Category: GTA IV :: Comments: 36
Following on from their hands-on preview earlier, IGN have released the official minimum and recommended PC specifications for GTA IV. They did it at the same time as officially (sort of) announcing that the game will be delayed, as was rumoured recently due to many online retailers pushing back the date to 2nd December.
There's no word directly from Rockstar yet, but we suspect IGN has better sources than Amazon. We'll keep you updated if we hear anything from R* on the matter.

Minimum System Requirements
  • OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz, AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz
  • Memory: 1.5GB, 16GB Free Hard Drive Space
  • Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900

Recommended System Requirements
  • OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1Ghz
  • Memory: 2 GB (Windows XP) 2.5 GB (Windows Vista)
  • 18 GB Free Hard Drive Space
  • Video Card: 512MB NVIDIA 8600 / 512MB ATI 3870

Still not sure if your PC is up to the job? Check our helpful forum thread. For convenience, the specs will be permanently on our GTA IV system requirements page, to save you having to find this news post.

w00t.

I can run it. Haha. I have a Core 2 Quad Processor, with the exact same speed. Hmm, 18GB is quite massive. In fact, it's biggest I've seen, I think. Graphics card can handle it too, which is ftw.

Hell, this is gonna be an awesome experience. biggrin.gif

Ah fuck. Gotta clear out my C drive, move some of my shit into my other hard drives. I still have like 1TB free space but it's only semi-organised. C drive is nearly full!

I'll be fine running it but I'm no longer so sure about running at 1680x1050 on max settings :/
It's been a long time since I had a look at graphics cards, anyone know how well my nVidia GeForce 8800GTS 320MB squares up to the recommended nVidia card there, as I've no idea? BTW it also utilises shared VRAM or some shit, dxdiag says total video RAM is 1.9GB, which leaves me with 2.1GB actual RAM free for the game. Sort of. smile.gif

What? Rockstar, you can't be fucking serious. A quad core? Bull. I bet you that you'd be able to run it nicely on an E4600.

Not at max settings you wouldn't.

An 8800 will no doubt play the game with everything you have, Chris.

Also, sucks for single-core users!

Gotta upgrade mah RAM!

Same, too. Maybe if I swap processors from the other PC that I built; it has a 2.2Ghz C2D, buy another stick and an 8600GT (or a 9600GSO), then I can run it even on low or medium.

Well, at least now I know what to get if I buy a new PC. Anyone think a 3 year old Compaq with a HD 3450, Sempron 3000+ will run it on low?

Well i barely pass the minimum requirements. Lets hope the game works, at least on medium.
Chris
#9 - October 31st, 2008 @ 12:11
Lol I doubt it, you don't even pass the minimum? You do realise that the minimums are basically another way of saying "this is what you require to run the game smoothly on low settings" - so you'll probably run it, but on the lowest settings, and it won't be that smooth.

Lol... They said San Andreas wouldn't run on anything lower than 512MB too. And that it needs a videocard installed. But my friend manages to play it with 256MB RAM, a crappy processor and an on-board 'Sis' videocard or w/e it's called xD

There is absolutely no way that a game of this quality of graphics will run on integrated graphics.

Great. I was afraid that the 8500GT wouldn't "do it".

Well the recommended is only the version above yours so it's not like there's huge differences. Granted you may not be able to play with everything on max but shouldn't be too far off.

hmmmm

me thinks i will get a ps3 instead, cos its abit cheaper tongue.gif

bloody pc part prices have skyrocketed here (core 2 e8400 was 200, now 260) cos of exchange rate of course.

ps3 will still be like $700...and will always work on these games no matter what smile.gif until ps4? heh

Umm... I just saw something at GTAForums. Some people say that IGN says "21st November" in UK and some other places too. They do say "3rd December" in USA too...
chris82
#26 - November 2nd, 2008 @ 14:57
No, they probably just haven't updated that section. If it's coming out in the U.S. on the 2nd, that implies it will come out on the 5th in Europe, since that's how Rockstar traditionally releases GTA.

#27 - November 2nd, 2008 @ 21:44
IGN, Gamespot & Wikipedia ( to say at least ) are all saying 21st November for EU/AU and 2nd December for US ... Is it a rule the US must get it first? Plus the PC gaming market in the US is weaker than the EU one so I see no reason why for the first time european people get the game first.

I'm saying they haven't updated it yet; Rockstar simply hasn't mentioned the delay will affect Europe too. Since there is no official word, it's against Wikipedia policy to change it. However, it's the way Rockstar traditionally does it and there is no reason why the European release date would stay the same as it was before and the U.S. date get pushed back nearly two weeks.

what's the difference between Nvidia Geforce 8400 GT(mines 8400) with 8500 GT?

They're both bad video cards, there is little difference. Try to get a 9600 if you're looking for a pretty cheap nVidia card.

Kinda weird, if they delayed the EU version too why didn't they mention it when they revealed the US delay? It doesn't make much sense IMO.
On 30th October they announced the delay for the US, why wait one week or two to announce the EU delay :| It's not too hard to say something like that.

R* north is in the UK, so the delay for US only could be possible IMO, but I still think its doubtful

That's just the way Rockstar has traditionally released their games. If it was released in Europe two weeks earlier (which isn't going to happen) it would surprise me.

It doesn't matter, Rockstar North which developed GTA IV is in the UK yes, but most of the work related to the PC version is happening in North America. The port to the PC is being handled by Rockstar Toronto in Canada and the publishing and prep-work is done by Rockstar NYC. Testing is likely being done by both Toronto and Lincoln.
